The University of Saskatchewan hosted their Ophthalmology virtual open house event on November 17, 2021, attended by the five current residents in the program. An overview of the program curriculum, faculty, and life in Saskatoon was delivered by chief resident, Dr. Wong, and program director, Dr. Rawlings.
Here were our highlights from this event:
● Residents are supported by a friendly group of dedicated staff and an in-house orthoptics program
● The PGY1 year is reserved for off-service rotations, such as otolaryngology and neurology, while PGY2-5 is devoted to ophthalmology learning
● With one resident accepted per year, the Ophthalmology program is small but close-knit and supportive
● There is no shortage of opportunities for residents to enhance their learning, including access to a wet lab with a surgical simulator, academic half days, teaching opportunities, and funding for research and external ophthalmology courses
● High surgical volumes and the absence of clinical fellows ensures trainees are well-prepared for a career in ophthalmology after residency
● The Saskatoon program services a large catchment area, including much of Saskatchewan as well as parts of Alberta and Manitoba
● Residents train in diverse settings, including various hospitals, community centres, and rural sites across the province
● Saskatoon is a lively city with a growing population, beautiful Meewasin trail, and riverside views. What better place is there to enjoy the benefits of prairie living?
