About Us

The Canadian Ophthalmology Student Interest Group (COSIG-GECIO) is  a collective run by medical students interested in ophthalmology from across Canada. Our goal is to support other medical students interested in ophthalmology by sharing resources, facilitating connections, and promoting student research and advocacy efforts.

What is Ophthalmology?

In Canada, ophthalmologists are medical doctors who have received their MD and completed a 5 year residency in an accredited ophthalmology program. Some choose to further their training in a subspeciality, including cornea and external disease, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, ophthalmic pathology, ophthalmic plastic surgery, pediatric ophthalmology, retina, uveitis, and low vision. They are surgical and medical specialists of the eye and work in hospitals and clinics. Ophthalmologists are an essential part of a patient's care team, in addition to optometrists, nurses, occupational therapists, and other allied health professionals.
